I am on the move, literally. I am leaving the Volunteer State of Tennessee and setting up stakes in the Constitution State (Connecticut). One of the snacks we’re bringing on our trip are some new chips called Poptillas.
Given that I will be driving with four kids and a large dog (Daisy, the yellow Lab), I have scouted pet-friendly hotels and will take advantage of the numerous rest areas along the way. If you have traveled with a pet before (successfully), I’d love to hear your experience and tips! This is brand new territory for me.
For the humans, we have entertainment planned, an itinerary and, of course, meals and snacks. Big G will be my co-pilot (she has her driver’s permit), Mee Rose will man the DVD player and movies, and CC will sit with our pup in the back. Little Man B will enjoy the ride.
Little Man B asked that we not eat fast food while on the trip, so I am scouting out alternatives such as deli sandwiches from the grocery store, deli-style sandwich restaurants, and pre-made salads. Since we are moving (and my kitchen is empty), and we have the dog, eating on the road is a bigger challenge than usual!
For those of you who are road-tripping this summer (and have your home-base kitchen intact), you may like some of these kid-friendly healthy snacks you can make yourself. My friend and colleague, Elizabeth Ward, RD, also has some great tips for fast food alternatives on her WebMD blog.
Poptillas are light, crispy and flavorful with up to 25% less fat because they are popped instead of fried. There are 3 different flavors: Yellow Corn, Nacho Cheese and Salsa Verde (my favorite). According to maker Classic Foods, they are:
Made with all-natural ingredients, and containing no cholesterol, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, trans fat, MSG, artificial flavors or colors. These delectable snacks are also made with whole grains and are gluten-free.
We like them at our house, and now we’re giving them away to 5 winners—a perfect way to try a new product! Winners will receive a variety box of all three flavors.
