Who wants to get on top of their hydration and bring more family fun to the topic of nutrition?
One of my biggest nutrition challenges is keeping up with my daily water intake. Admittedly, I would rather eat food than drink. That’s why I was excited to review this hydration calculator, Aqua Tally. I think it will help me drink more.
Hydration, and drinking water, in particular is important for your health and the health of your family. Whether you have little athletes or just want to keep your youthful glow, drinking enough water is one of the healthiest habits you can adopt. And even if you or your kids aren’t big on water, making sure your family gets plenty of hydration from other liquids and food (read: fruit and veggies) is important.
If you are interested in the effects of hydration on your young athlete, I have written about this over at USA Swimming and US Rowing.
The folks over at MyAquaTally have created a hydration calculator–a solution for tracking fluid intake that helps adults and children (even me!) keep track of their daily fluids. Initially created by a registered nurse for patients with chronic health problems to help them stay on top of hydration, AquaTally may also be useful for growing athletes and health-conscious people like me and you!
Fluid intake is incredibly easy to track (I have consumed over 4 cups of water as I write) using the AquaTally. An indicator on the cup itself can be rotated to track 1 or 2 cups at a time. You can drink other liquids in the AquaTally too, even coffee. It’s safe to clean in the top rack of your dishwasher and it is BPA-free.
Yummm! Card Game
The Harvard University students who developed Yummm! contacted me about reviewing their new card game aimed at teaching kids and parents about nutritious food and how to create a balanced meal. Of course I said yes!
Yummm! offers two different games: Yummm! and Omni-War. The goal of Yummm! is to earn the most points by creating a balanced meal through obtaining a hand of five cards with one card from each food group (fruit, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy)—sort of like a royal flush. Omni-War’s goal is to capture as many cards as possible, through comparing face values of the cards where the highest face value wins all the cards, similar to the card game War.
While the playing games aren’t unique, the pictures and content of the individual cards are full of learning opportunities. Not only will children be able to categorize foods in their food groups, like broccoli into the vegetable group, they also learn about the variety of foods within food groups. What I like best is the ability to help children learn about what goes into a balanced meal. Who knows, Yummm! may even create some new meal combinations in your home!
